Serena Williams to participate at Wimbledon

The fact no WTA points are up for grabs at Wimbledon this year did not seem to impact Serena Williams’s decision to compete at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. It is at the third major of the year where Williams has decided to make her tennis return, and in the process go after her record-tying 24th grand slam women’s singles title according to Tim Daniels of Bleacher Report. 

At the age of 40, Williams has not participated in a match since withdrawing from Wimbledon in 2021 with an injury. At the time of the ailment, Williams was playing Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, and was tied at three games apiece when Williams was unable to continue. Sasnovich, meanwhile will not be competing at Wimbledon this year as Russians and Belarusians are banned due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That is behind the reason why the ATP and WTA Tour are not rewarding points in the event in 2022.

Serena Williams has won seven Wimbledon titles in the past. They came in 2002, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016. Serena’s first three Wimbledon titles came over her sister Venus, who has won five Wimbledon titles herself. Serena Williams’s other Wimbledon title wins came over Vera Zvonareva of Russia (2010), Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland (2012), Garbine Muguruza of Spain (2015), and Angelique Kerber of Germany (2016).

The fact that Serena has not won at Wimbledon since 2016, and not won a major since winning at the Australian Open in 2017, could be considered shocking to some. However, Williams appears to be slowing down a bit now, and it will be very interesting to see how far she goes, even though many may treat Wimbledon 2022 as an exhibition!
