Serena Williams to become part owner of the Toronto Tempo

According to David Li of NBC News on Monday. Serena Williams is going to be a part owner of the Toronto Tempo of the WNBA. Williams continues to be busy since retiring in 2022. She has been busy with motherhood, as the former world number one has two children now, Olympia and Adira. Williams also is a part owner of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League.
In making the decision to be a part owner of the Tempo, Williams stated the following, “this moment is not just about basketball. It is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes.” The Tempo are one of three WNBA franchises that are about to join the league. The Golden State Valkyries are starting in 2025, and joining the Tempo as a WNBA expansion team in 2026 are the Portland Fire.
It is interesting that Williams, an American, is investing in the WNBA’s only Canadian franchise at a time where tensions are extremely high between Canada and the United States. This week, Donald Trump, the American president, imposed 25% tariffs on imported products from Canada and Mexico. Canada retaliated on imposing tariffs on American products. After decades of free trade, we have never seen so much tension between Canada and the United States over the last century.
The primary owner of the Tempo are the Kilmer Sports Ventures. It is interesting that Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment did not express interest in owning a stake in the Tempo, even though they own a major part of the Toronto sport market including the Toronto Raptors.
