It appears women’s tennis legend Serena Williams of Saginaw, Michigan will not be returning to tennis anytime soon. On Monday according to TMZ, Williams announced a second child is on its way while attending the Met Gala in New York.

Williams was one of several big name sports celebrities who attended the fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Others included Roger Federer, Patrick Mahomes, Russell Westbrook, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Brittney Griner, Daniel Ricciardo, Dwyane Wade, Stefan Diggs and Eileen Gu.

Once again, Williams was able to outshine them all with her big announcement. While tennis fans might have been hoping Williams would have made an announcement of a return to tennis, apparently those plans will be on hold at this time. However, one must remember that Williams did win the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant with her first child!

Outside of Serena, the tennis world is focused on Madrid at the moment, as the first Masters 1000 series event on clay for men and women in 2023 is taking place. One of the headlines is the fact that Mayar Sherif became the first Egyptian woman to qualify for the quarterfinals of a WTA Masters 1000 series event. She accomplished the feat by beating 24th seed Elise Mertens of Belgium, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 in the round of 16. Sherif however then lost to 2023 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The favourite on the women’s side to take the title should still be world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland. Although it should be pointed out that Swiatek has not won in Madrid before.
