Semifinals set at 2025 Wimbledon

We now know the four semifinalists left in the gentlemen’s draw and ladies’s draw at Wimbledon 2025. On the gentlemen’s side, world number one Jannik Sinner of Italy will face world number six and 24-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia, and world number two and 2024 Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will face world number five Taylor Fritz of the United States.

Djokovic, Fritz, Sinner and Alcaraz were all favoured to win their quarterfinal matches and came through. Alcaraz won his quarterfinal match convincingly in straight sets over Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner of Italy also won without losing a set as he beat Ben Shelton of the United States, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.

As the tournament progresses, we will have to monitor Sinner’s elbow, as he suffered an ailment in his fourth round match against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. At first glance, I thought Sinner injured his wrist, but it was apparently the elbow where he is experiencing pain.

Djokovic and Fritz meanwhile needed four sets to pick up the W in their quarterfinal wins. Djokovic beat Flavio Cobolli of Italy, 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. Fritz beat Karen Khachanov of Russia, 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.

On the ladies side on Thursday, the eighth seed Iga Swiatek of Poland will face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, and the world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will face the 13th seed Amanda Anisimova of the United States in the semifinals. In the quarters, Swiatek beat Liudmila Samsonova of Russia, 6-2, 7-5, Bencic beat Mirra Andreeva of Russia 7-6, 7-6, Sabalenka beat Laura Siegemund of Germany 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a fascinatingly and unexpectedly tight matchup, and Anisimova beat Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 7-6. These two sets were direct opposites. Anisimova clobbered Pavlyuchenkova in the first set, and won 11-9 in the second set tiebreak. Sabalenka, meanwhile was down a break at 4-3 in the third set, and won three straight games to prevent the upset.
