Scrappy Bunnies just simply ‘need to be better’: Murray

Cameron Murray has declared the Rabbitohs just simply “need to be better” after losing to the Brisbane Broncos in a scrappy performance that saw the travelling South Sydney squad misfire in attack.
The ball-playing lock, who was among those who contributed to South’s 14 errors in 80 minutes, has looked to put a rocket under his team after their 10-point loss to Brisbane.

“We put ourselves under so much pressure with those dropped balls, all those mistakes,” the 26-year-old club captain said after the Rabbitohs sank to their second straight loss of the 2024 NRL season; the first came in Las Vegas two weeks ago when the Manly Sea Eagles lit up Allegiant Stadium in the year’s opening clash.
Murray was one of eleven players in the Rabbitohs seventeen to cough up the footy through the 80-minute battle, with the lock admitting it just simply isn’t good enough—especially when Jason Demetriou had focused on “building on first successes” all week.
Unfortunately, Deine Mariner and Reece Walsh had both scored in the first half even before Siliva Havili found the tryline in the 42nd minute. Davvy Moale doubled the haul minutes later but the Broncos came roaring back and the already beleaguered Bunnies just couldn’t keep up.
“We used up all our energy in defence and then that meant we were a bit scrappy in attack so it all snowballed from there,” Murray continued. “It’s always going to be a bit scrappy at the start of the season but we do need to be better. We came in with a defensive focus but there’s only so much defending you can do.

“We talked about starting fast, [how] we needed to start with a lot of energy and I thought we did that in the second half. We talked in the huddle about putting in a 40-minute performance but then the very next set we had an error—from myself, actually—and we put ourselves under too much pressure. We have to value our goalline defence and get those errors out. We’ll lick our wounds, do our homework, and turn up better next week… it’s all we can do.
“There’s good signs there, but all it is is we need to be better.”
