Scottie Scheffler leads Cameron Smith by three after third round of 2022 Masters

Round three is now in the books at the 2022 Masters. Scottie Scheffler of Ridgewood, New Jersey had a six-stroke lead over Australia’s Cameron Smith heading into Saturday. Now that lead has been cut in half, as Scheffler’s lead over Smith is now three strokes instead of six strokes.

On Saturday, Scheffler shot a one-under-par 69 to improve his overall score from -8 to -9. He had six birdies and five bogeys. He birdied the second, third, sixth, eighth, 13th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the fourth, 12th, 14th, 15th, and 18th holes.

There is no doubt that one thing Scheffler is lacking at the moment is confidence. From a mental perspective, Scheffler now has to find a way to get the momentum back in his corner.

Smith meanwhile had the lowest round in round three at four-under-par to move from -2 t0 -6. He had six birdies and two bogeys. Smith birdied the second, sixth, eighth, 10th, 13th, and 15th holes, and bogeyed the third and 16th holes.

One of the biggest storylines heading into Sunday is the fact that the top two golfers on the Masters leaderboard have never won a major. However, they have won a combined total of five PGA events in 2022, with Scheffler winning three times, and Smith winning twice. Scheffler, who is now world number one because of his three titles, was victorious at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the World Golf Matchplay Championship. Smith has two wins in 2022 which came at the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Players Championship.
