Scottie Scheffler dominating the field at the 2022 Masters

It has been well documented on the Sporting Base this year the wonderful season Scottie Scheffler has been having in 2022. So far in this calendar year, he has won the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the World Golf Matchplay Championship from Austin, Texas.
The new world number one entered Augusta without a major title to his name. Scheffler, a 25-year-old from Ridgewood, New Jersey, has been knocking on the door at the majors over the last two years. In 2020, he tied for fourth at the PGA Championship, and then last year he finished in the top 10 at three majors–seventh at the U.S. Open, and eighth at the British Open and PGA Championship.

On Friday, Scheffler moved into the lead at the 2022 Masters with a sensational round. He shot a score of five-under-par 67 with seven birdies and two bogeys. Scheffler birdied the second, seventh, eighth, 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th holes, and bogeyed the first and third holes. In the process, he moved from -3 to -8.
At this time, Scheffler has a five-stroke lead over four other golfers. They are South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel, South Korea’s Sungjae Im, Ireland’s Shane Lowry, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama.
The five-stroke lead after 36 holes is tied for the largest lead at the halfway point in Masters history. The others who had a five stroke lead were Harry Cooper (1936), Herman Keiser (1946), Jack Nicklaus (1975), Raymond Floyd (1976), and Jordan Spieth (2015). Only Cooper did not hang on to win, as he was beaten by Horton Smith.
