San Diego Padres Acquire Pitchers Zach Davies And Drew Pomeranz

The San Diego Padres will have two new pitchers in their lineup in 2019. On Wednesday, they acquired Zach Davies and Drew Pomeranz from the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres acquired Davies via trade and Pomeranz via free agency.

Davies was traded with outfielder Trent Grisham and either cash considerations or a player to be named later for second baseman Luis Urias and starting pitcher Eric Lauer. Pomeranz meanwhile signed a four-year contract worth $26 million.

Davies is the best player among the five to change teams on Wednesday. He could find his way near the top of the rotation with Chris Paddack in 2020. In 2019, Davies had a record of 10 wins and seven losses with an earned run average of 3.55, 102 strikeouts compared to 51 walks.

Pomeranz appears to be used as a reliever, even though he has experience as a starter as well. It was a tough 2019 season for Pomeranz as he only had a record of two wins and 10 losses with an earned run average of 4.85 with the Brewers and San Francisco Giants. Still, the Padres must like the fact that Pomeranz had 137 strikeouts in 104 innings.

Grisham batted .231 with six home runs and 24 runs batted in with the Brewers in 2019. However, he will be remembered the most for his key error when he missed fielding the baseball in right field during the eighth inning in the Brewers’ 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals in the 2019 National League Wildcard Game.

Urias batted .223 with four home runs and 24 runs batted in with the Padres in 2019. Lauer meanwhile appears to be joining the Milwaukee starting rotation. Last year in San Diego, Lauer had a record of eight wins, 10 losses and an earned run average of 4.45.
