Sam Burns maintains lead after round three of 2025 US Open

It has been a fascinating last two weeks for American golfer Sam Burns of Shreveport, Louisiana. A week ago, Burns was in the mix before losing to Ryan Fox of Auckland, New Zealand at the RBC Canadian Open in a fascinating four hole playoff. Today, Burns is in contention again. This time he has a one stroke lead over his nearest competitors heading into the fourth and final round of the third major of the year, the 2025 United States Open at Oakmont, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Burns was the second round leader at the US Open after Friday at -3. He is now at -4. On Saturday, he shot a third round score of one-under-par 69. Burns had three birdies and two bogeys. Burns birdied the fourth, 13th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the second and 16th holes.

There are currently three other golfers in contention. Australia’s own Adam Scott of Adelaide and American J.J. Spaun of Los Angeles, California, are both one stroke back at -3. Scott is a major champion from the past as he won the 2013 Masters. Spaun was the round one leader at Oakmont. On Thursday, he posted a score of -4.

Then at -1 is Norwegian Viktor Hovland. No Norwegian has ever won a major in men’s golf. Suzann Pettersen of Oslo is the only golfer to win a major in women’s golf. She was victorious at the 2007 Women’s PGA Championship and the 2013 Evian Championship.

Reminder that the contenders tee off one hour earlier on Sunday than Saturday. The reason behind the scheduling is to save time for a possible playoff.
