Saints Pro Bowl safety Tyrann Mathieu retires at age 33

According to the Associated Press on Tuesday, three-time NFL Pro Bowl Safety Tyrann Mathieu of New Orleans, Louisiana has retired at the age of 33. Mathieu spent a dozen seasons in the National Football League. He was with the Arizona Cardinals for five seasons from 2013 to 2017, the Houston Texans in 2018, the Kansas City Chiefs for three seasons from 2019 to 2021, and the last three seasons with the New Orleans Saints from 2022 to 2024. Mathieu had the fortune as retiring playing for the team he grew up watching as a child.

While with the Chiefs, Mathieu won a Super Bowl in 2020. In Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20. Mathieu had six combined tackles (four solo tackles and two assisted tackles). Mathieu was selected to the Pro Bowl with the Cardinals in 2015, and with the Chiefs in 2020 and 2021.

This past season, Mathieu had 62 combined tackles (47 solo tackles and 15 assists), one tackle for a loss, three interceptions for 29 yards, seven pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. The fumble recovery came in a 47-10 Saints win over the Carolina Panthers on September 8, 2024.

In Mathieu’s career, he had 838 combined tackles (685 solo tackles and 153 assisted tackles), 45 tackles for a loss, 27 quarterback hits, 11 quarterback sacks, 36 interceptions for 530 yards, with four interceptions for a touchdown.

Mathieu also had an impact at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. While as a defensive back at Louisiana State University, Mathieu was fifth in Heisman Trophy Voting in 2011. He led the Southeastern Conference with six forced fumbles as a sophomore.
