Sabine Lisicki tears her ACL in doubles match in Austria

German tennis star Sabine Lisicki will be out for the long term according to the Associated Press on Wednesday. Lisicki tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a women’s doubles match in Linz, Austria, and has already had surgery.

On Monday, Lisicki had teamed up with Jodie Anna Burrage of Great Britain. Lisicki and Burrage were actually leading Yana Sizikova and Ulrikke Eikeri of Norway 6-5 in the first set of the first round of the Linz Open at the time of the injury.

The ACL ailment is just the latest of a series of injuries that have plagued Lisicki in the last 11 years. In 2009, Lisicki slipped on the tennis court at the U.S. Open against Anastasia Rodionova of Australia. As a result, she suffered a serious ankle sprain, and required a wheelchair to get off the court. Since then, Lisicki has had injuries to her ankle, back, abdomen, hip, shoulder, wrist, and knee. Due to the fact Lisicki did not play a WTA singles event at all in 2020, her singles ranking has fallen all the way down to 690th in the world.

In her prime, Lisicki reached the Wimbledon women’s singles final in 2013. There she won six matches before losing to Marion Bartoli of France, 6-1, 6-4. Among the players Lisicki beat on the way to the Wimbledon Final were three grand slam champions–Francesca Schiavone of Italy, Samantha Stosur of Australia, and Serena Williams of the United States.

In her career, Lisicki has been ranked as high as 12th in the world and has won four WTA titles. They came at the 2009 Charleston Open, the 2011 Birmingham Classic, the 2011 Texas Tennis Open, and the 2014 Hong Kong Open.
