Russell Westbrook donates 650 computers to children

Coronavirus continues to hit the United States hard. On Monday, Houston Rockets point guard Russell Westbrook of Long Beach, California made a significant contribution as he donated 650 computers to children in need according to the Associated Press.

Westbrook joined forces with Comp-U-Dopt and the city of Houston to make sure the computers got to underprivileged children who need the electronic device for education purposes. Schools are currently closed in Houston as the city is dealing with one of the worst pandemics to ever hit civilization.

According to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, 83% of the students receiving the computers live in households where the family income is less than $35,000 per year. Westbrook’s foundation, titled Why Not? was founded in 2012 and was formed to assist children who are facing difficulties in life.

A lot of the funds from Why Not? go to educational and family service programs. On an annual basis, Westbrook donates his time serving food for people in need at American Thanksgiving and providing presents to children at Christmas. In the past he has also hosted basketball and bowling camps and read to youth. In addition to Houston, where Westbrook is currently based, he has helped the American cities of Oklahoma City (where Westbrook played for the Thunder before the Rockets) and Los Angeles (largest American city near his native city of Long Beach).

So far in 2019-20, Westbrook was an all-star for the sixth straight season and ninth time in 10 years. He was averaging 27.5 points per game, eight rebounds per game and seven assists per game at the time of the coronavirus hiatus.

Currently, the Rockets have a record of 40 wins and 24 losses. They are tied for fifth place with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the National Basketball Association’s Western Conference.
