Rory McIlroy to take time off from PGA Tour

According to Jimmy Golen of Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday, four-time major golf champion Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland is going to take some time off away from the PGA Tour. McIlroy is scheduled to miss the Travelers Championship this weekend in Connecticut, the Rocket Mortgage Classic next weekend in Detroit, and the John Deere Classic the week after in the Quad Cities, Illinois.

At this time, McIlroy is not in the best head space mentally and needs time to improve his confidence. The reason McIlroy’s degree of positivity is not very high at the moment is because of his putting struggles late in the fourth round of the 2024 United States Open on Sunday. McIlroy missed short putts of four feet and two and a half feet in two of the last four holes. As a result, Bryson DeChambeau of Modesto, California won his second U.S. Open in the last five years.

McIlroy’s four major titles are 21st all-time. He has the fourth most major wins among active golfers. He is only behind Tiger Woods of Cypress, California (15), Phil Mickelson of San Diego, California (six), and Brooks Koepka of West Palm Beach, Florida (five).

However, one cannot ignore the fact he has not won a major in a decade. McIlroy’s four major wins came in a four year time period from 2011 to 2014. He won the 2011 United States Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship, and the 2014 British Open. Since his last major win a decade ago, McIlroy has been in the top 10 in 21 major events, and in second place four times.
