Rory McIlroy records third career hole in one

For only the third time in his career on Thursday, Rory McIroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland, the world number three, hit a hole in one. He accomplished the feat on the 15th hole on the Spyglass Hill in the first round of the 2025 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

McIlroy moved from four-under-par to six-under-par with one shot. His ace was on a par three and landed 119 yards into the hole without a bounce.

McIlroy’s first career ace as a professional golfer came at the 2015 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on the DP World Tour (formerly known as the European Tour). The four-time major champion used a nine-iron and his shot went 177 yards into the hole. McIlroy finished the tournament at -18, in second place and one stroke back of the champion, Gary Stal of Decines, France.

McIlroy’s second career ace as a professional golfer came at the 2023 Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut. It came on the par-three eighth hole and went 214 yards into the hole. Like the 2015 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, McIroy finished with a four round score of -18. However, this time McIlroy only finished in seventh place, and was five strokes back of the eventual champion, Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont. 

In the first round of Pebble Beach on Thursday, McIlroy was one of two major champions to record a hole in one. The other was Shane Lowry of Clara, Ireland. Lowry aced the seventh hole 113 yards. Like McIroy, Lowry has three aces as a competitive golfer. He did it on the 16th hole of the Masters in 2016, and the 17th hole of the Players Championship in 2022.
