Roosters succeed in keeping Walker from free agency with $2m extension

Sam Walker has quietly re-signed with the Sydney Roosters for a further two years this week, with the now-signed final two seasons of the young halfback’s new-look deal in 2026 and 2027 set to earn him $2 million.

This is a huge victory for the Roosters because Walker was just about to hit NRL free agency on November 1, meaning he could have spoken to rival suitors about ’26 onward.

The re-signing was first reported by veteran rugby league journalist Phil Rothfield on Monday night’s episode of NRL 360, where he suggested the extension would be made public in the next few weeks. The Sporting Base has since heard the Roosters are now planning to bill the huge re-signing sometime before November rolls around.

This $2 million deal will be split all-but perfectly between 2026 and 2027. His management team originally knocked back a $900,000 offer, so Walker has come out around $200,000 ahead after wading through negotiations over the last few months.

There was claims Walker could leave Sydney, but he was always eager to stay in Bondi if possible.

Among the biggest NRL clubs interested in Walker were the Brisbane Broncos, who were eager to bring the 22-year-old superstar back to Queensland, and the St George Illawarra Dragons, where head coach Shane Flanagan liked Walker as a potential replacement to aging halfback Ben Hunt. Neither will get their chance to strike now.

Walker just missed this year’s finals series after suffering a knee injury in Sydney’s Round 26 loss to Canberra. He’s not expected to return until midway through next year.
