Tennis legend Roger Federer of Basel, Switzerland has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island according to Howard Fendrich of the Associated Press. Federer was the only person inducted into the player category in 2026. Tennis broadcaster Mary Carillo of Queens, New York was inducted into the contributor category. In order to be inducted, players must be retired for a minimum of five years and be selected by 75% of those eligible to vote.

You may wonder why Federer is being inducted in 2026 when he officially retired in 2022. That is because he only played one doubles match throughout the entire 2022 tennis season. He teamed up with Spain’s Rafael Nadal at the 2022 Laver Cup in London, England, and lost to the American duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe, 4-6, 7-6, [11-9].

Federer has won 20 grand slam singles titles. He won eight Wimbledons (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, and 2017), six Australian Opens (2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017 and 2018), five United States Opens (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008), and one French Open (2009). Federer’s 20 grand slam titles are the third most of all-time. He is behind Novak Djokovic of the Czech Republic (24), and Rafael Nadal of Spain (22). Federer has won 103 ATP titles, which is second all-time. The only player with more ATP titles is American Jimmy Connors of Belleville, Illinois with 109 titles.

Carillo was a long-time tennis commentator. She worked for PBS, NBC, ESPN, HBO, USA Network, MSG, CBS, and Turner Sports. Carillo would regularly work in the broadcast booth with men’s tennis star John McEnroe, who was also based in New York. Carillo was also a regular for NBC’s Olympic coverage.
