The tough 2021 tennis season for Roger Federer of Switzerland is continuing. On Sunday, Federer announced he will not be playing at the U.S. Open later this month due to knee surgery, and due to the fact he will be out “many months,” according to Ben Church and Jacob Lev of CNN, there is no question his participation at the 2022 Australian Open in Melbourne is in serious doubt.
The 2021 U.S. Open is the second major event that Federer is missing this calendar year. He also missed the 2021 Australian Open because of two right knee surgeries he had in 2020. Now one needs to wonder just how long Federer will play high-level caliber tennis for, and if we are nearing the end in watching one of the greatest players of all time.

Just how difficult has it been for Federer in 2021? Well, he has only participated in five tournaments. Federer reached the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open before losing in three sets to Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, the second round of the Geneva Open in his home country of Switzerland before losing to Pablo Andujar of Spain, the fourth round of the French Open before withdrawing against Matteo Berrettini of Italy, the second round of the Halle Open in Germany before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where he was bageled in the final set in a defeat to Hubert Hurkacz of Poland.
In 2020, Federer only participated in one single tournament. That was the Australian Open, as he reached the semifinals before losing in three sets to Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
