Not many people saw the Phoenix Suns beating the Houston Rockets on the weekend. No one expected the Suns to come away with a 127-91 win over the Rockets at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona.
The fact that the Suns beat the Rockets by 36 points is significant. The Rockets 36 point loss to the Suns was the largest loss for a team that entered the game as the favourite in the NBA in 30 years according to ESPN.
It was a marvelous performance for Suns small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana. Oubre Jr. had a career high 39 points to go along with nine rebounds. He was also prolific on his bobblehead night as he shot seven three pointers in nine attempts.
Oubre Jr. was one of several Suns players who stunned the NBA on Friday. Shooting guard Devin Booker of Grand Rapids, Michigan also reached the 30 point plateau with 33 points. Three other Suns players reached double figures in scoring. Power forward Cheick Diallo of Kayes, Mali had 14 points off the bench, while small forward Mikal Bridges of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had 13 points and center DeAndre Ayton of Nassau, Bahamas had 12 points.
The Suns also hammered the Rockets with no one collecting a double double. Booker was a team high +26, while Oubre Jr. and Elie Okobo of Bordeaux, France were a team high +24.
With the win, Phoenix improved to a record of 21 wins and 31 losses, while the Rockets fell to a record of 33 wins and 19 losses. After the Phoenix shocker, the Suns lost 117-108 to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday and the Rockets lost 114-113 at home to the Utah Jazz on Sunday.
