Rickie Fowler wins Rocket Mortgage Classic in a three-hole playoff

Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, California won the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic from the Detroit Golf Club on Sunday. The 34-year-old won his sixth PGA Tour event, and needed a playoff to get into the winner’s circle. After shooting a -24, he defeated Canadian Adam Hadwin of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and American Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles, California on the first hole of a playoff. Fowler birdied the 18th hole, while Morikawa and Hadwin were unable to record a birdie.
Fowler had scores of five-under-par (round one), seven-under-par (round two), eight-under-par (round three), and four-under-par (round four). He also posted an eagle on the 17th hole in round two.
In Detroit, there was a three-way tie for fourth place at -21. There you could find a trio of Americans–Taylor Moore, Lucas Glover and Peter Kuest. Of the golfers who were in contention in Detroit were two major champions. Morikawa won the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2021 British Open, while Glover of Greenville, South Carolina won the 2009 United States Open.
One of the most intriguing stories from 2023 has been the return of Fowler. There was a period of time in professional golf where he struggled with his game. At the beginning of 2023, Fowler was ranked outside the top 100 at 103rd in the world. However, a series of impressive results including Sunday’s win has seen him climb 80 places to 23rd in the world.
In 2023, Fowler missed the cut only once. That came at the PGA Championship. In Fowler’s 16 events, he has been in the top 15 on 11 occasions, and has exemplified extraordinary consistency. Fowler’s five prior PGA Tour wins came at the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship, the 2015 Players Championship, the 2015 Duetsche Bank Championship, the 2017 Honda Classic and the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. In Fowler’s wins at the Wells Fargo Championship and the Players Championship, he also won in a three-man playoff. At the Wells Fargo Championship 11 years ago he beat Rory McIlroy and D.A. Points. At the Players Championship eight years ago, Fowler beat Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner.
