Red Sox fire Ron Roenicke as manager

Ron Roenicke’s time as the manager of the Boston Red Sox was a short-lived one. According to the Associated Press on Sunday, Roenicke, a native of Covina, California, was relieved of his duties, after posting a record of 24 wins and 36 losses in 2020.

This was not supposed to be a good Red Sox team this past year, but not many expected them to finish dead last in the American League East with a record of 24 wins and 36 losses. They were easily passed by the Toronto Blue Jays, who made their way into the American League postseason with a record of 32 wins and 28 losses, and the Baltimore Orioles, who finished the year at 25 wins and 35 losses. In 2019, the Red Sox were 17 games ahead of the Blue Jays and 30 games ahead of the Orioles in the American League East.

Yes, Roenicke came to Boston under difficult circumstances. However, he did have five years of Major League experience with the Milwaukee Brewers. Roenicke replaced former manager Alex Cora, who was let go in January for his participation in the very controversial Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. But with the offensive depth the Red Sox had, you would think they would have contended for a playoff spot in the American League this year. That was simply not the case.

The Red Sox offense was respectable. Their 292 runs were fifth in the American League. However, their pitching was simply horrendous. They gave up 351 runs, the most in the American League, and second most in all of baseball. Only the Colorado Rockies at 353 runs, gave up more runs than Boston. The Red Sox team earned run average was also a horrible 5.58.
