Ravens suspend wide receiver Diontae Johnson

When Diontae Johnson of Tampa, Florida was traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Baltimore Ravens on October 29, there was an initial belief by many that the recent acquisition by the Ravens would give Baltimore significant offensive depth for the rest of the season and beyond. Johnson would be joining a high potent Ravens passing game where quarterback Lamar Jackson of Pompano Beach, Florida is second in the National Football League with 3290 passing yards.

This trade where the Panthers are receiving a fifth round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft from the Ravens, and the Ravens are receiving a sixth round draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft from the Panthers, has not worked out in Baltimore’s favour to date. Since the deal, Johnson has only had one catch for six yards. That came in Baltimore’s 35-34 win over the Cincinnati Bengals on November 7.

Johnson was getting so few targets (five in four games), he refused to take the field on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, a 24-19 Baltimore loss. As a result, Johnson was suspended on Wednesday for his actions according to BVM Sports. The terms the Ravens are using at this time are “conduct detrimental to the team.” So after the Ravens have their bye week this weekend, Johnson will not be on the field on December 15 when the Ravens face the New York Giants, but would be eligible to play on December 21, when the Ravens face their AFC North rivals, Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before joining the Ravens, Johnson had 30 catches for 357 receiving yards and three touchdowns. This was Johnson’s first season in Carolina after five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers where he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021.
