Randwick Review: Anamoe Set For Huge Spring

ANAMOE cemented his position as Australia’s best horse with his victory in the Group One Winx Stakes at Randwick and set himself up for a big spring which again underlined the training ability of James Cummings.

It was another training masterstroke for Cummings who set Anamoe for a first-up win as he wanted him to add a 1400 metres Group One to his CV as a stallion.

Cummings said there weren’t many opportunities to win such races in Australia and he was overcome with emotion after the win.

Cummings also pointed out that only two other horses in the past 30 years, had been able to win Group One races as a two-year-old, three-year-old and four-year-old which were Octagonal and Show A Heart.

Cummings said it was amazing how Anamoe came back to racing each preparation a better horse. That he could do this was also testimony to his training skill.

Cummings also said that with some luck Anamoe could have won a Golden Slipper Stakes as a two-year-old and a Cox Plate as a three-year-old.

He didn’t reveal what the spring plans were for Anamoe but there’s little doubt the Cox Plate would be his main goal.

After the race was run at a slow speed and James McDonald had given Anamoe a perfect run the race was at his mercy.

The powerful Godolphin team also unveiled the second most impressive winner of the day when Zapateo, also by Street Boss, put in the most impressive performance of her career with an easy win in the Toy Show Stakes.

The Danny O’Brien trained Showmanship having only his second start in two years took his record to an imposing eight wins from 10 starts when he made up five lengths over the final 300 metres of the Show County Stakes to in the finish win comfortably.

John O’Shea’s lightly raced stayer is in for a huge spring judging by his first-up return with a sixth in the Winx Stakes being beaten only 2.59 lengths. He recorded the fourth fastest last 200 metres with only the placegetters returning faster times. Looks a Caulfield Cup horse.

FANGIRL

She recorded the fastest last 200 metres of 10.81 seconds. Chris Waller has managed to get her to improve every campaign and she looks in for her best one yet. She’s only had 11 starts so there’s a lot to come.

JAMEA

The Robert and Luke Price trained four-year-old mare was the sectional star of the meeting, recording the fastest last 200 metres of the meeting of 10.67 seconds when she came from a long way back to finish second to Zapateo. She’s a backmarker but looks set for a great campaign.
