There is another interesting National Football League connection to the athletics competition of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Earlier this week, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico, younger sister of Chicago Bears outside linebacker Robert Quinn, won the gold medal in the women’s 100 metre hurdles. On Saturday, there is a strong possibility that Vashti Cunningham of the United States, the daughter of former NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Randall Cunningham, could win a medal in the women’s high jump.

Vashti Cunningham enters the Olympic competition as the world championship bronze medalist. At the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, Cunningham was able to jump two metres over the bar. Cunningham and Yuliya Levchenko of the Ukraine both jumped two metres, but Cunningham won the bronze as she cleared two metres on her first attempt, while it took Levchenko three attempts to clear two metres. Mariya Lasitskene of the Russian Olympic Committee (who was representing the Authorised Neutral Athletes at the time) won the gold medal with a jump of 2.04 metres, while Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine won the silver medal.

Randall Cunningham was a quarterback in the NFL for 16 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens from 1985 to 2001. Four times Cunningham went to the Pro Bowl–three straight years with the Eagles from 1988 to 1990, and another year with the Vikings in 1998. While with the Vikings in his Pro Bowl year, Cunningham led the NFL with a 106 quarterback rating. In 2016, Cunningham was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame after an outstanding career at UNLV.
