Rafael Nadal to compete in the 2024 Brisbane International

According to the ATP Tour on Friday, Rafael Nadal will participate at the 2024 Brisbane International. This will be the first time in five years the ATP Tour is coming to Brisbane. Nadal is one of two high-profile players returning to professional tennis after a long layoff. The other is Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka, who is returning to tennis after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July.

Nadal has not played on the ATP Tour since the 2023 Australian Open when he lost in three sets to Mackenzie McDonald of the United States, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. The reason for the long absence has been because of a hip injury.

Nadal stated in May that he will likely retire from tennis following the 2024 season. One major reason why he is waiting until the end of 2024 to retire is so he can compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. There is speculation that Nadal would not just participate in singles, but doubles too with world number two Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal has previously won the gold medal in men’s singles at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, and men’s doubles at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro alongside Marc Lopez. Nadal has had incredible success at Roland Garros, where the Olympic Games will take place. He has won an amazing 14 French Opens. 

The Brisbane International previously took place from 2009 to 2019. Only one Spaniard has qualified for the final. In 2009, in the very first Brisbane International, Spain’s Fernando Verdasco lost to the Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Nadal reached the quarterfinals of Brisbane in 2017 before losing to Canada’s Milos Raonic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
