Rafael Nadal records his 300th win in a grand slam singles tournament

According to ESPN on Wednesday, Rafael Nadal of Manacor, Spain made tennis history by becoming only the fifth player ever (male or female) to win 300 singles matches at major tournaments. Nadal has won 107 matches at the French Open, 76 matches at the Australian Open, 64 matches at the United States Open, and 53 matches at Wimbledon. The 107 matches at the French Open have come while Nadal has won a record 13 French Open titles. 

Nadal won his 300th match in the second round of the French Open over France’s Corentin Moutet. It was a simple match for the world number five, as he came away with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win.

Nadal saw Mouet’s serve extremely well. He had 12 break point opportunities during the three sets of action, of which he broke Moutet seven times.

The other four players to record 300 wins at a major tournament are Roger Federer of Switzerland, Serena Williams of the United States, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, and Martina Navratilova. During Navratilova’s career, she represented the United States and Czechoslovakia.

Federer has won 369 career grand slam men’s singles matches (105 at Wimbledon, 102 at the Australian Open, 89 at the United States Open and 73 at the French Open). Williams has won 365 career grand slam women’s singles matches (106 at the United States Open, 98 at Wimbledon, 92 at the Australian Open, and 69 at the French Open). Djokovic has won 323 career grand slam men’s singles matches (83 matches at the French Open, 82 matches at the Australian Open, 81 matches at the United States Open, and 79 matches at Wimbledon). Navratilova has 306 career grand slam women’s singles matches (120 at Wimbledon, 89 at the United States Open, 51 at the French Open, and 46 at the Australian Open).
