Rafael Campos becomes second Puerto Rico player to win on the PGA Tour

For only the second time ever, a Puerto Rican player has won on the PGA Tour. On Sunday, Rafael Campos of San Juan, Puerto Rico posted a four round score of -19, and in the process won the 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Campos follows in the footsteps of the great Chi Chi Rodriguez, who died earlier this year at the age of 88. The World Golf Hall of Famer won eight times on the PGA Tour in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Rodriguez won the 1963 Denver Open Invitational, the 1964 Lucky International Open in San Francisco, the 1964 Western Open in Chicago, the 1967 Texas Open Invitational, the 1968 Sahara Invitational in Las Vegas, the 1972 Byron Nelson Classic in Dallas, the 1973 Greater Greensboro Open, and the 1979 Tallahassee Open.

This past weekend, Campos had a first round score of one-under-par 70 in the first round, six-under-par 65 in the second round, nine-under-par 62 in the third round, and three under-par 68 in the fourth round. Twice Campos had an eagle. He posted a score of three on the seventh hole in the first round on Thursday, and then again on the same hole in the fourth round on Sunday.

Andrew Novak of Raleigh, North Carolina was alone in second place at -16. He was three strokes back of Campos.

It should be noted that this is the first time since the BMW Championship in Denver, Colorado back on August 25 that a PGA Tour champion posted a score less than -20. That is when Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont won the FedEx Cup Playoff event with a score of -12.
