Quarterfinals set for knockout stage of 2022 Davis Cup

We now know the eight countries that will be participating in the 2022 Davis Cup knockout stage from November 22-27 in Malaga, Spain. Joining Italy, the Netherlands, the United States, Australia and Germany, who qualified by Friday, are Canada, Spain and Croatia.
Canada is in the final eight because of an incredible performance by Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec. In a span of two days, Auger-Aliassime beat world number one and the United States Open champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, and teamed up with Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, British Columbia to beat the Spanish duo of Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Friday, before beating Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4 on Saturday.
Spain won Group B by sweeping South Korea 3-0 on Sunday. Roberto Bautista Agut beat Seong-chan Hong 6-1, 6-3, Alcaraz beat Soon-woo Kwon 6-4, 7-6, and then Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martinez beat Ji-sung Nam and Min-kyu Song 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.

Croatia meanwhile qualified for the Davis Cup Group Stage quarterfinals by beating Argentina 3-0 in Bologna. The Croatian wins came from Borna Gojo, who beat Sebastian Baez, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, Cincinnati Masters champion Borna Coric, who beat Francisco Cerundolo, 6-4, 7-6, and the men’s doubles duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, who beat Maximo Gonzalez and Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 7-5.
The quarterfinal matchups have the United States versus Italy, Canada versus Germany, Spain versus Croatia, and the Netherlands versus Australia. The quarterfinals will take place over a period of three days from November 22-24. In fact, Australia’s tie against the Netherlands will begin the tournament on November 22. The semifinals will be on November 26 and the finals on November 27.
