With Wimbledon tuneup events on grass starting to take place throughout Europe, the All England Club made the news on Wednesday when they announced that they will increase the total prize money for the third grand slam event of the year. According to the Associated Press, the total prize money will be 44.7 million pounds, which is equivalent to $56.5 million.

That will be an increase from 40.35 million pounds at the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. In that event, the singles champions, Novak Djokovic of Serbia on the men’s side, and Elena Rybakina of Belarus on the women’s side, received 2 million pounds each. The singles champions in Wimbledon in 2023 will receive 2.35 million pounds each.

The Wimbledon entrants will have more to play for than just money in 2023. They will be playing for ranking points unlike last year. In 2022, Wimbledon was close to being like an exhibition, as the ATP and WTA did not give out ranking points because they disagreed with the All England Club’s position not to allow Russians and Belarusians from competing. The reason why Russians and Belarusians were not allowed to compete is because of Russia’s current war on Ukraine.

The ATP and WTA Tours were so opposed to the All England Club’s position on Russia, Great Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association was fined $1 million. More sanctions would have taken place this year unless the Russians and Belarusians were allowed to participate. As a result, even though Great Britain is strongly opposed to the Russian war on Ukraine, Russians and Belarusians will be participating at Wimbledon in 2023.
