Pistons fire general manager Troy Weaver

According to James Foglio of sportscasting.com on Saturday, the Detroit Pistons have fired general manager Troy Weaver of Washington, District of Columbia. Weaver had a poor record as the Pistons general manager, as he was only at 74 wins and 244 losses for a winning percentage of .233.

There is no doubt the Pistons took a step backward with Weaver in charge. At the time of his hiring, the Pistons had a 2019-20 regular season record of 20 wins and 46 losses for a winning percentage of .303. The Pistons winning percentage that season was not very good at all. Yet, while Weaver was at the helm when it came to player personnel and coaching decisions, the Pistons did not even reach the .300 mark in terms of winning percentage in any of his four seasons as Detroit’s National Basketball Association general manager. The Pistons were at 20 wins and 52 losses for a winning percentage of .278 in 2020-21, at 23 wins and 59 losses for a winning percentage of .280 in 2021-22, at 17 wins and 65 losses for a winning percentage of .207, and at 14 wins and 68 losses for a winning percentage of .171.

At first glance, the major reason why the Pistons made this move is because there were no signs that the Pistons were making any progress. Detroit had the worst record in the entire NBA in 2023-24. It was highlighted by a record-breaking 28-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in NBA history. The Pistons won their first two of their first three games of the season in October, and did not win another game until December 30.
