Pistons delivering impressive turnaround in 2024-25

We documented the Detroit Pistons’s terrible 2023-24 season thoroughly. It included a 28 game losing streak, with the 28th straight loss coming in a remarkable Boston Celtics comeback. Last season, the Celtics were trailing the Pistons 66-45 right before the end of the first half, when the Pistons self destructed in the second half, and eventually lost 128-122 in overtime. The loss tied the Philadelphia 76ers for the longest losing streak in NBA history, and defined Detroit’s season as they had a horrendous record of 14 wins and 68 losses.

Fast forward to 2024-25, and the Pistons deserve praise for their Wednesday win. Once again Detroit had a 20-point lead on Boston. However, this time they were able to protect it, and stun the Celtics, the reigning NBA champions, 117-97. This victory for Detroit could define their season. However, this time it is for positive reasons.

Detroit may go from being the worst team in the NBA to a top six spot in the Eastern Conference and avoid the silly play-in tournament. They have now won eight straight games dating back to January 31. All of a sudden. the Pistons have a record of 33 wins and 26 losses for a winning percentage of .559. They are four and a half games ahead of the seventh place Orlando Magic.

You could make the argument that head coach J.B. Bickerstaff is doing an unbelievable job, and deserves all the money they previously gave to Monty Williams, when Detroit named Williams their head coach and gave him a six-year contract worth $78.5 million. As we know, Williams only lasted one season, and we know how horrendous last season in Detroit turned out to be.
