PGA Tour becoming like LIV Tour in 2024 changes

You can make the definite argument that the PGA Tour will become more like the LIV Tour during eight designated events in 2024. According to Kyle Porter of CBS Sports, there will be an attempt to reduce the field from 132 golfers to 78 golfers with no cut.

Sound familiar? Well the LIV Tour does not have a cut in their tournaments, and only 48 golfers competed in Mexico this past weekend in the opening event of the LIV season which was won by Charles Howell III of Augusta, Georgia. According to Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated, three projected designated events in 2024 will be The Memorial, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Genesis.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational is taking place this weekend with the current leader being Kurt Kitayama of Chico, California, who is currently at -9. There are 120 golfers in the field with the top half after round two making the cut.

The 2023 Genesis Open already took place. Jon Rahm of Spain was the champion in southern California, and in the process moved to number one in the world. There were 129 golfers at Riviera last month.

There is a belief that cuts and larger fields will remain at the four major championships and at the Players’ Championships. However, it should be noted that there are only 90 players at the Masters, as it is the most challenging major to enter.

One prestigious PGA event that doers not have a cut is the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January in Maui. Like the Genesis Open, Rahm is the reigning champion there too.
