According to ESPN on Sunday, golfer Grayson Murray of Raleigh, North Carolina died of suicide on Saturday at the age of 30. Murray was competing at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas and withdrew after 16 holes during his second round because of an illness.

Murray, who had a drinking problem in the past, was reportedly sober for a full year in May of 2024. The suicide was confirmed by Murray’s parents according to Nicholas Rice of People Magazine.

The PGA meanwhile put out a statement on their X account stating, “if you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call the national suicide and crisis lifeline in the United States at 988 or visit their website at 988lifeline.org.” That is actually good to know. Most are aware of calling 911 if they are in a crisis or danger, but many may not be aware that 988 is an option if one is experiencing a mental health crisis.

Murray won twice on the PGA Tour. His first victory was at the 2017 Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky where he shot a four round score of -21 and beat American Chad Collins of Indianapolis, Indiana. It should be noted that the Barbasol Championship takes place the same weekend as the British Open, and contains mostly of a field of PGA players that did not qualify for the only major in men’s golf that takes place outside the United States. Murray also won the 2024 Sony Open in January, where he beat Byeong-hun An of Seoul, South Korea and 2011 PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley of Woodstock, Vermont in a one-hole playoff after shooting a four round score of -17.
