Payne Haas extends for two more years in mega Broncos upgrade

Payne Haas, who is arguably the best prop in rugby league right now, has recommitted to the Brisbane Broncos until at least the end of the 2026 NRL season by signing a huge upgrade that makes him one of the highest-paid players in the entire league.

The Sporting Base originally reported Haas would be staying as early as August 7, with Channel 9 and News Corp adding their own reports earlier this week. The expectation is Brisbane will unveil the re-signing on Thursday.

Haas will now earn around $1.2 million a year to play for the Broncos.

This brings him quite close to level with Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, who signed an extension with the Titans last week that will see him earn around the same—a top-class pay packet for any forward—for the next 10 years. David Fifita earned similar in his early years on the Gold Coast before a slight pay haircut in his latest deal.

The Haas saga is all but wrapped up this week now, with Brisbane moving quite quickly once the Canterbury Bulldogs voiced their interest in adding the 23-year-old to their developing pack.

Craig Bellamy had also quietly asked Melbourne Storm bosses to bring the prop south.

Haas has been adamant behind the scenes for some time that he wants to stay in Brisbane but was happy to let his management test the waters and sound out any bumper deals. Though nothing was officially tabled, the Storm and Bulldogs were joined by the St George Illawarra Dragons and the Newcastle Knights (Haas’ hometown) in putting their name into the early mix.

An eleventh-hour approach from rugby union also appeared a few days ago, though The Sporting Base understands the rushed offer—from the Western Force—was basically ignored by Haas’ party.

Haas was originally being paid around $850,000 a season, so this upgrade adds nearly half a million to his annual income.

The Broncos now turn their attentions to retaining Ezra Mam, who is expected to re-sign quite soon, and Reece Walsh, who is unlikely to seriously consider any other NRL offers.
