Paula Reto leads after first round of 2023 Evian Masters

Paula Reto of Cape Town, South Africa is the leader after the first round of the 2023 Evian Championship. Over 18 holes, the 2022 Canadian Women’s Open champion had a score of -7 after posting a score of 64.

Reto had eight birdies and one bogey. She birdied the first, fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth. 12th, 15th, and 18th holes, and bogeyed the 11th hole.

There is a four-way tie for second place at -5, and two strokes back of Reto. Those golfers who shot a score of 66 were Thailand’s Wichanee Meechai, France’s Celine Boutier, American Alison Lee, and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko. Of those four in second place is one major champion. Ko won the 2015 Evian Masters and the 2016 ANA Inspiration.

Meanwhile, nine golfers are tied for sixth place at -4. Those are Americans Angel Yin and Ally Ewing, South Korea’s Su Ji Kim, A-Lim Kim, Ji Eun-Hee, and Hae Ran Ryu, Japan’s Yuka Saso, Norway’s Celine Borge, and Germany’s Esther Henseleit. Of those in sixth are three major champions who all won the United States Women’s Open. Ji won the 2009 United States Women’s Open. A-Lim Kim won the 2020 United States Women’s Open. Saso, who was representing the Philippines at the time, won the 2021 United States Women’s Open.

There is no doubt that that the Evian Championship is one of the most fascinating golf courses in the world from a spectator point of view. The second hole is completely breathtaking with its postcard scenery. It should be noted that the Evian Resort Golf Club is a lot closer to a North American style golf course than a European one, as there are not any links type holes.
