Patriots release running back James Robinson

The New England Patriots have released running back James Robinson of Rockford, Illinois before he even played a single game with his new club according to Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports. Robinson signed a two-year deal worth $8 million on March 17, the same day the Dallas Cowboys released Ezekiel Elliott and the same day the New Orleans Saints signed Jamaal Williams of Rialto, California to a three-year deal worth $12 million.
Robinson was cut on the day the Patriots held mandatory minicamp. As a result of the release, the Patriots have cleared $1.1 million in cap space, and Robinson will only receive $150,000 as part of his guaranteed contract according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
With the release of Robinson, the Patriots will be going with a tandem of Rhamondre Stevenson of Las Vegas, Nevada and Ty Montgomery of Dallas, Texas in 2023. New England lost running back Damien Harris of Richmond, Kentucky in free agency to the Buffalo Bills back in March.
Robinson has simply not been the same running back since he tore his Achilles while with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2021 National Football League season. Prior to the injury, he had 4.6 yards per rush as he had 1070 yards with the Jaguars during the 2020 NFL season and 767 yards during the 2021 NFL season. Ironically, he was given more playing time than expected in 2021 because Travis Etienne Jr. had a season ending foot injury prior to the start of the regular season. Then in 2022, Robinson only averaged 3.9 yards per rush and was traded to the New York Jets midseason when Breece Hall tore his ACL.
