Last week I picked a Canadian as one of our three top tips. However, I picked the wrong one as I went with Corey Conners instead of the eventual Sony Open champion, Nick Taylor of Winnipeg. Now the PGA Tour leaves Hawaii for the California swing. Here are our three top tips for the American Express Championship in La Quinta, California.
Kurt Kitayama
The 31-year-old native of Chico, California has one win on the PGA Tour. That came at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational. He shot a score of -9 and beat Harris English and Rory McIlroy by a stroke. The reason why we like him this week is because he has only missed two cuts in his last 10 tournaments (the United States Open of 2024, and the Wyndham Championship). Kitayama also has two top 10 finishes in that time. He was fifth at the Zozo Championship and sixth at the 3M Open.

Ben Griffin
In order to win the American Express, the winner has to make birdies, and no golfer made more birdies in 2024 than American Ben Griffin of Chapel Hill, North Carolina as he made 479 according to statmuse.com. Griffin has made nine of his last 10 cuts and finished eighth in Bermuda in the fall.

Christian Bezuidenhout
The 30-year-old South African had the best score among professionals at the American Express last year. However, he did not win the tournament as the victor was amateur Nick Dunlap of Huntsville, Alabama at -29. We cannot ignore Bezuidenhout’s -28 last year either and the fact he has made his last eight cuts.
