Our three best tips for the 2024 Canadian Open

For the fourth time this year there will be a PGA Tournament taking place outside the United States. After Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, California won the Mexico Open, Brice Garnett of Gallatin, Missouri won the Puerto Rico Open, and Billy Horschel of Grant, Florida, won the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic, the Canadian Open begins Thursday from the Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the seventh time.

Past champions are James Douglas Edgar of Newcastle, England (1919), three-time major champion Tommy Armour of Edinburgh, Scotland (1930), 1986 PGA Championship winner Bob Tway of Oklahoma City. Oklahoma (2003), 2003 United States Open champion Jim Furyk of West Chester, Pennsylvania (2006), Scott Piercy of Las Vegas, Nevada (2012), and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy of Holywood, Northern Ireland (2019). Armour won the 1927 United States Open, the 1930 PGA Championship and 1931 British Open. McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship and 2014 British Open. Rory McIlroy

The world number three is the clear favourite to get the win on Sunday. McIlroy is actually a two-time Canadian Open champion as he won in 2022 in St. George’s, where he beat Tony Finau by two strokes. When he won the 2019 Canadian Open in Hamilton, McIlroy was dominant as he beat 2019 British Open champion Shane Lowry of Ireland and 2012 United States Open champion Webb Simpson of Raleigh, North Carolina by seven strokes after posting a four round score of -22. McIlroy has won once already in an individual event on the PGA Tour in 2024, as he won the Wells Fargo Championship.

Shane Lowry

The world number 33 had a solid PGA Championship where he was tied for sixth. It was one of three top 10 finishes he has had in 2024, as the Irishman was fourth at the Cognizant Classic and third at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Matt Kuchar

The nine-time PGA champion from Winter Park, Florida had a solid showing at the 2019 Canadian Open the last time the event was in Hamilton, as he shot a four round score of -13 and was tied for fourth place. The 17th place at the Charles Schwab Challenge was Kuchar’s best finish in 2024.
