The fourth and final major of the golf season is set to start on Thursday from Royal Troon in Scotland. Here are the three golfers we like the most.

Xander Schauffele

The world number three seems to play his best golf in the May to August time frame. It is in this period of time Schauffele has won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, the 2024 PGA Championship, the 2017 Greenbrier Classic, the 2022 Travelers Championship, and the 2022 Scottish Open. Schauffele’s best result at the British Open came in 2018, when he finished in second place at -6, and two strokes back of the eventual winner Francesco Molinari of Italy.

Rory McIlroy

We are well aware of McIlroy’s struggles on the final few holes at Pinehurst with his putter. The real question now is whether or not the world number two is in the right mental frame of mind to win a fifth major title. At the Renaissance Club a week ago, he posted a respectable four round score of -14, but only posted a score of -2 on Sunday. This result continues to raise questions if McIlroy can finish the job when it matters most.

Ludvig Aberg

The remarkable rise in the world rankings for Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg is well documented. Now we can ask is Aberg ready to win a major? The answer is yes. Aberg is fourth in the world, and was in striking distance of Scottie Scheffler at the Masters, and finished second. He has not won on the PGA Tour in 2024, but has been remarkably consistent with seven top 10 finishes. It should be noted that the last player to win the British Open at Royal Troon was Sweden’s Henrik Stenson in 2016.
