Our NRL Team of the Week — Round 27: Fight for finals brings out the best

In the final week of 2024 NRL regular season play, Jahrome Hughes all but locked up the Dally M gong, though James Tedesco made sure he was going to be in the conversation right down to the wire. Elsewhere, the Eels fired to avoid the wooden spoon.

Here’s the standout NRL players from Round 27, as selected by The Sporting Base team.

1. James Tedesco (Roosters)

Kept the 2024 hype train going with two tries, two try assists, two clean breaks, and a monster 220 metres as the Roosters, who were missing several key stars, belted their Sydney archrivals the Rabbitohs.

2. Will Warbrick (Storm)

Speaking of monster run counts, Warbrick ran for over 300 metres on Thursday! Add in a hat-trick (incredibly it’s not even top billing) and it was certainly a night to remember for Will as he ran the Broncos around the park and put them to the sword.

3. Will Penisini (Eels)

Two tries and a game-high 203 run metres in the Eels vs. Tigers showdown the whole NRL world stopped to watch.

4. Valentine Holmes (Cowboys)

Something must have switched in Val Holmes since he realised he’s leaving North Queensland; has been immense as his time with the club comes to an end. Eight goals and a try for 20 points in a 44-6 bloodbath over the Bulldogs.

5. Greg Marzhew (Knights)

No tries for the winger but plenty of go-forward as he muscled the Knights out of trouble again and again in a very close encounter. Ran for 229 metres at Hunter Stadium under Sunday arvo lights.

6. Braydon Trindall (Sharks)

Shared much of the marshalling for the Sharks with Nicho Hynes and doesn’t appear to have lost his step since his halves partner returned; led the kicking with 291 kick metres from 10 boosts, including six bombs.

7. Jahrome Hughes (Storm)

Chalked up a first career hat-trick as Melbourne showed why they’re number one on the ladder, dismantling the flagging Broncos.

8. Reagan Campbell-Gillard (Eels)

Farewelled the Eels in style with a try and 35 tackles in the Spoon Bowl.

9. Jacob Liddle (Dragons)

The Dragons couldn’t hold on the end but it wasn’t Liddle’s fault. Demolished the Raiders down the middle with three clean breaks and even jagged a try for himself in the flurry of scores in the opening 20.

10. Tom Burgess (Rabbitohs)

In a season chock full of high-profile farewells, Burgress stood up and delivered in his final Bunnies game with a try, a conversion (for luck on the road we suppose), and 19 tackles in 36 minutes.

11. Briton Nikora (Sharks)

Iced a Cronulla barnstormer at Brookvale with tries in the 65th and 70th minute and proved too much for the Manly pack with six tackle busts.

12. Heilum Luki (Cowboys)

Four breaks, a try, and a brutal running barrage against the Bulldogs as the Cowboys stunned the fifth-place hopefuls.

13. Isaah Yeo (Panthers)

Made 14 suns (the most of the forwards) for 44 post-contact metres and was only beaten on tackles by Mitch Kenny, 46 to 48.
