Our Black Book: Horses You Must Follow From Rosehill 22/3

The replays and sectional times have been reviewed from Saturday’s massive day of racing at Rosehill. Our analyst has found 4 runners to follow, including a Curtis mare that caught the eye at $91 on Saturday. 

Bacio Del Mist

The Curtis 7yo mare has never been going better. She did look to be outclassed on paper in the G2 Epona and the $91 quote reflected that. After settling at the rear from the outside gate, she really defied the pattern of the day as the widest runner up the straight but still made up great ground to finish 2.3L 5th. Her final 600m of 34.12s was only slightly off Mare of Mt Buller and Be Real and she did it in the worst going. I’d love to see her step slightly back in grade and up to 2000m next start. 

Fawkner Park

I loved the way the Neasham/Archibold 6yo closed off to finish 2L 3rd behind Via Sistina in the Ranvet after settling at the rear. His final 600m was 33.58 and only 0.09s off Via Sistina’s. I’m not sure if the plan is to go to the Queen Elizabeth or back up into the Tancred over 2400m next week. I think a run like that behind the best horse in the country would have him right in the Tancred.

Fangirl

Likely already in everyone’s black book but I thought the champion mare was the run of the day. She jumped cleanly but it just panned out ugly and she was going to find herself 3-wide wherever she landed. J-Mac kept her working despite the wide run and she was entitled to tire halfway up the straight. Instead she knuckled down only to just miss in a photo finish to Gringotts enjoying a much softer run.

Briasa

No doubt one to follow from the Galaxy but he needs to find the right race with the right map. He jumped well but just didn’t have the zip in his legs to find the required position midfield or better. He soon found himself last on the turn with too much to do. The way he flew down the outside to finish 1.7L 4th was eye-catching.

He looks tough to place from here. The TJ over 1200m is the logical choice but he wouldn’t be well placed going from 54.5kg to 59kg under weight for age conditions. The All Aged Stakes over 1400m on Day 3 of The Championships looks the right race if he is going to go the WFA path.
