Our Black Book: Horses You Must Follow From Randwick 5/10
1 year ago - Sportingbase
The replays and sectional times have been reviewed from Saturday’s Randwick meeting and our analyst has found an emergin 2yo filly that looks set to target the Golden Slipper and an exciting 4yo that had no luck in the final race of the day.
Bel Merci
The John Thompson 2yo arrived at the races for the first time with a big watch on her after hitting the line strongly at the trials. She signalled she is a talented filly by showing versatility railing through to sit on-speed before the turn. When Chad Schofield pressed the button at the 300m she dashed clear and put them away by 1.4L.
It’s always fraught with danger getting excited about 2yos this time of year but the ominous factor with her is that John Thompson does not screw his 2yos down for start 1 like Waterhouse, Baker and Snowden do. She goes for a spell and I expect her to show significant improvement when she return pre-autumn.

Briasa
The Hawkes 4yo put his 4-start undefeated record on the line in a BM94 field that looked more like a Listed field. Barrier 13 was what brought him unstuck as he was forced to sit 4 and 5 wide between midfield and off pace the trip. He was entitled to throw the towel in but instead loomed as the winner at the 300m before the tough run took its’ toll and he peaked to finish 0.5L 4th. He likely wins with a low gate.
I am wary that he only carried 52.5kg and that his rating will go up after that run. He is clearly super talented but I’d like to see the Hawkes team not rush him into a Golden Eagle path. He’d be a good thing in the BM88 over 1400m at Randwick on Silver Eagle day in a fortnight if they do steer clear of the Silver Eagle.
