Our analyst has reviewed the sectional times, ratings & replays from last Saturday’s Caulfield meeting & has placed four horses you must follow in our black book below.

FIRST MATE

Talented galloper who is going to have a big summer ahead of him. He wasn’t suited by the pattern of racing at Caulfield which played to on-pacers. He also ran into a dead end at the 300 metres mark. When Blake Shinn got him to the outside he flew home to finish third recording 11.55 seconds for the last 200 metres which was the third fastest for the day.

DIVINE PURPOSE

Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman are going to win plenty of races with this former Queensland mare. Saturday could have been the first at Caulfield when she debuted for them with a second as she was slow to begin and then couldn’t gain a run in the straight when her jockey Carleen Hefel went for a narrow gap on the rails.

SKYBIRD

She suffered her first defeat but she lost no admirers when she finished third in the Thousand Guineas as she had to come from off the speed. Mitch Freedman could leave Caulfield knowing he has a filly who can match it with any other three-year-old filly at Group 1 level next year.

AYRTON

The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was a nightmare for this galloper. He got squeezed out early and forced to settle along way back. Then when he was full of running he was held up for a run at the 400 metres, then again soon after and at the 100 metres he again had to be restrained when crowded for room. Despite this he was beaten only 3.35 lengths.

CAPTAIN ENVIOUS

He had to go back from his outside draw and gave away a big start but he finished off in the manner of a smart middle distance galloper for third in the Victorian Country Cup final. He should be to the fore over a longer trip at his next start and he could win a race at a good level.
