You could make the argument that the Baltimore Orioles have been the most active team in the offseason to date. On Wednesday, the Orioles had their biggest signing in the offseason so far. According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumours, the Orioles signed first baseman Pete Alonso of Tampa, Florida to a five-year deal worth $155 million. This means that Alonso is set to make $31 million per season.

Alonso is joining his second Major League Baseball franchise after seven seasons with the New York Mets, where he was a National League All-Star five times (2019, 2022 to 2025), and the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year.

This past season, Alonso batted .272 with 38 home runs and 126 runs batted in. During 162 games, 624 at bats and 709 plate appearances, Alonso scored 87 runs and had 170 hits, 41 doubles, one triple, one stolen base, 327 total bases, nine sacrifice flies, an on base percentage of .347 and a slugging percentage of .524.

Alonso’s 41 doubles in 2025 led the National League. His triple on April 28 came in a 5-4 Mets win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The rookie season for Alonso in 2019 was record breaking. That is because he set the MLB record for most home runs in a season by a rookie with 53. Alonso broke the record previously set by New York Yankees outfield Aaron Judge of Linden, California, who had 52 home runs.

Alonso is just the latest new face for the Orioles. They have also acquired closer Ryan Helsley of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, infielder Nick Allen of San Diego, California, outfielders Taylor Ward of Dayton, Ohio and Leody Taveras of Tenares, Dominican Republic, and pitcher Andrew Kittredge of Spokane, Washington.
