Opinion: Way too early to compare the Thunder to the 1990s Chicago Bulls

One of the interesting stories in the National Basketball Association in 2025-26 is the fact that the Oklahoma City Thunder are at 18 wins and one loss. Their winning percentage is a masterful .947. They are smoking hot at the moment as they are winners of 10 straight games.

On the opening night of the season, Reggie Miller, while working for NBC Sports, made an interesting comparison between the Oklahoma City Thunder today and the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Miller stated “We could see a dynasty in the making here. A young Chicago Bulls. There’s Michael, that’s SGA. There’s Scottie, there’s Jalen Williams.”

Wow, Miller. Hold your horses. Yes, the Thunder are the reigning champions in the NBA Finals, and Gilgeous-Alexander is the reigning NBA MVP. It is way too early to compare the Thunder to the Bulls and Gilgeous-Alexander to the greatest player of all-time in Michael Jordan. 

I remember Jordan in the prime of his career, and the consistent magical shot making he produced on a consistent basis. He guided the Bulls to an unprecedented six titles in eight years, and the two seasons Jordan did not win the NBA Finals, he took two years off from the NBA to play minor league baseball.

The bottom line is that Gilgeous-Alexander is great. He is a future Hall of Famer and the best Canadian basketball player ever. However, Gilgeous-Alexander is not the G.O.A.T. and he is not on a Thunder team that has not delivered a dynasty–yet. We can bring up this discussion again in a decade. Not now.
