Opinion: No surprise that Cowboys fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus
2 months ago - Sportingbase
The Dallas Cowboys have fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus of Toledo, Ohio. The news of the firing is zero surprise because the Cowboys gave up 511 points this past season. That was the most points allowed in the National Football League.
The Cowboys gave up 30.1 points per game, and the defense was the primary reason the franchise had a losing record this past season. Dallas’s offense was strong and cannot be blamed. Led by four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott of Sulphur, Louisiana, the Cowboys scored 471 points, which was the third most in the National Football Conference. Only the Los Angeles Rams (518) and the Seattle Seahawks (483) scored more points than Dallas in the NFC.

Just how good was Prescott? Well, he led the NFL in completions for the second time in his career. This past season Prescott had 404 completions. Prescott also had 4552 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes. However, you could make the argument that Prescott was in a passing mode for the majority of the season because the defense was awful.

Don’t expect Eberflus to get a top coaching job in the NFL anytime soon. Prior to his disastrous season as Cowboys defensive coordinator, he had three awful seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. In 46 games, Eberflus had a record of 14 wins ands 32 losses for a poor winning percentage of .304. Many wondered what took the Bears so long to fire Eberflus. Chicago needs to be thrilled with the coaching staff they have in place this season, as Ben Johnson has been outstanding.
