Opinion: Lack of certainty factored into Victor Perez joining LIV Tour

Victor Perez of Semeac, France is the latest golfer to leave the PGA Tour for the LIV Tour. On Wednesday according to The Golfing Gazette, we now know a major reason why. Perez claims he was very confused at times this past year whether or not he qualified for particular events. There were circumstances when Perez thought he was in, but was not. By choosing the LIV Tour instead of the PGA Tour, Perez knows when and where he will play.

I am not sure if this is something the PGA Tour can learn from or not. The bottom line is that the PGA Tour and LIV Tour have emerged as two completely different entities. Yes, the LIV Tour offers certainty for participants, but lacks the excitement among spectators. The way the PGA Tour creates its tournaments, it generally promotes uneasiness, complication and tension. This is not a bad thing, as players battle to make the cut and in turn qualify for prestigious tournaments. Those who win tournaments get interim stability on the Tour. The structure is far from perfect, but players like Perez cannot be blamed for switching tours, when the opportunity arises.

Perez is currently 124th in the world. This past year, he had one top 10 finish. That came at the  2025 RBC Canadian Open, where he had a four round score of -14, finished in ninth place, and four strokes back of champion Ryan Fox of New Zealand. Also in 2025, Perez had the best US Open result of his career, as he finished tied for 19th place.
