Opinion: Could the Cowboys go through a defensive retool by releasing Trevon Diggs?

The National Football League postseason is less than two weeks away, and one team that did not make the postseason this year are the Dallas Cowboys. At seven wins, eight losses and one tie, the Cowboys are mathematically out of the National Football Conference playoff picture despite scoring 454 points. That is the third most points this season. The only two teams that have scored more are the Los Angeles Rams (481 points), and the Seattle Seahawks (470).

The fact that the Cowboys struggled defensively, should not be a huge surprise. They shockingly traded Micah Parsons of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to the Green Bay Packers prior to the start of the season. Now, after giving up 477 points (the most in the NFL), they have decided to release cornerback Trevon Diggs of Gaithersburg, Maryland according to Matthew Huff of The Sports Daily on Tuesday.

Diggs had three years left on his contract that would have seen him make $55 million. Now with the NFL rules where contracts are not guaranteed, the Cowboys actually save money by releasing their star cornerback. Expect the Cowboys to start retooling their defense so there is not so much of a gap between their talented offense and untalented defense.

This season, Diggs played in eight games with the Cowboys. He missed significant time due to knee injuries and a concussion, as he hit his head while trying to install his television set according to the Associated Press. In 2025, Diggs had 25 combined tackles (18 solo tackles and seven assisted tackles), and one tackle for a loss.

Diggs was selected to the Pro Bowl twice while with the Cowboys. The Pro Bowl selections came in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, Diggs led the NFL in interceptions (11), yards from interceptions (142), and pick sixes (two).
