Opinion: Agree NY Knicks’s decision to not hang NBA Cup banner
2 months ago - Sportingbase
The New York Knicks have made an interesting decision not to unveil their NBA Cup banner at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks won the NBA Cup on Tuesday when they beat the San Antonio Spurs 124-113. But unlike when the Los Angeles Lakers won the first NBA Cup two years ago, and when the Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Cup last year, the Knicks fans who enter MSG will never know they won this strange midseason basketball tournament that completely disrupts the entire National Basketball Association regular season.
One reason why the Knicks are not unveiling the banner is because their focus are the NBA Finals. The Knicks have won two NBA Finals in franchise history. The first came in 1970 and the second came in 1973. In the 1970 NBA Finals, the Knicks defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games, and in 1973, they defeated the Lakers again. This time it was only in five games.

New York is currently second in the Eastern Conference at 18 wins and seven losses. They are only behind the Detroit Pistons, who are at 21 wins and five losses. Interestingly, the San Antonio Spurs are also at 18 wins and seven losses, and are tied for third place in the Western Conference.

The Knicks decision not to celebrate the NBA Cup makes complete sense. This midseason tournament has an exhibition game as their championship. The players earn even more money than when they originally earn from their extraordinary contracts. Hopefully the NBA learns from the Knicks’s decision not to celebrate their victory.
