Nuggets trade Michael Porter Jr. to Nets for Cameron Johnson

There was a very interesting trade made in the National Basketball Association on Monday. According to the Associated Press, the Brooklyn Nets are trading power forward Cameron Johnson of Moon Township, Pennsylvania to the Denver Nuggets for small forward Michael Porter Jr. of Indianapolis, Indiana and a first round pick in the 2032 NBA Draft. This is the second time this week that we are seeing a draft pick in a trade that is well down the road. The Charlotte Hornets are getting a second round pick in 2030 from the Utah Jazz in the Collin Sexton/Jusuf Nurkic trade. 

Johnson is joining his third NBA team. He previously played with the Phoenix Suns from 2019 to 2023, and with the Brooklyn Nets from 2023 to 2025. This past season, Johnson averaged 18.8 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 3.4 assists per game. He had a field goal percentage of .475, a three point percentage of .390, and a free throw percentage of .893.

Porter Jr. is joining his second NBA team. He previously played the last six seasons with the Nuggets. In 2024-25, he averaged 18.2 points per game, seven rebounds per game, and 2.1 assists per game. Porter Jr. had a field goal percentage of .475, three point percentage of .390, and a free throw percentage of .768.

In 2023, Porter Jr. was also an integral part of the Nuggets franchise that won the NBA Finals. Yes, the principal players were definitely Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, but Porter Jr. was effective offensively in the Nuggets supporting cast. In 20 postseason games two years ago, Porter Jr. averaged 13.4 points per game.
