Novak Djokovic wins men’s record 23rd grand slam with 2023 French Open title

Novak Djokovic has now won the most grand slam titles of all men’s tennis players ever. On Sunday, Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud of Norway 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 to win the 2023 French Open. With the win, Djokovic now has 23 grand slam titles, and passed Rafael Nadal of Spain, as Nadal has won 22 grand slams.
Djokovic has now won three grand slam titles since Nadal won his 22nd grand slam at the 2022 French Open. Djokovic won the 2022 Wimbledon title and 2023 Australian Open.
By winning on Sunday, Djokovic set two more tennis records. They were being the oldest French Open men’s singles champion ever (36 years and 20 days), and the first men’s tennis player to win all three grand slams thrice (has 10 Australian Open titles, seven Wimbledons, three United States Opens and three French Opens). The previous record belonged to Nadal, who was 36 years old and two days when he won the 2022 French Open.
Djokovic’s two previous French Open titles came in 2016 and 2021. In the 2016 French Open final, Djokovic beat Andy Murray of Great Britain, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. In the 2022 French Open final, Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Djokovic also returns to number one in the world, as he passes Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Daniil Medvedev of Russia.Djokovic has now been first in the world a record 388 weeks.
In the men’s final on Sunday, Djokovic lost the first three games of the match, but he won four of the next five games to even the set at four games apiece. In the first set tiebreak, Djokovic dominated Ruud by a score of 7-1. Djokovic had the much better serve throughout the match as he had 11 aces compared to four for Ruud. Djokovic also broke Ruud thrice in the match (one time in each set) and won 118 total points compared to 89 for Ruud.
